Instructor Stuart
Elkin (4th Dan), formed Clacton Shotokan
Karate Club in 1995 and Brightlinsea &
Frinton Clubs in 2003. In 2004, all
the clubs came under the
heading of Essex Shotokan Schools of
Karate.
Stuart is a Senior Instructor within the
association and is current Association
squad manager. He is an EKGB Qualified Assessor
and an EKGB Qualified Referee and Judge.
Stuart is also an active Squad coach and
Course Instructor.
Stuart's particular field of interest
lies in "realistic martial arts" with
the emphasis on REAL and tries to keep a
progressive view towards karate &
martial arts in general. Seeking out the
techniques that would offer real
self-defence, in a real life situation.
While it has to be generally accepted,
that it is very hard to train for "live"
situations, using the teachings of
self-defence experts Geoff Thompson and
Peter Consterdine, he hopes it will at
the very least, make students more aware
and give them "the edge" to walk away in
one piece!
Iain Abernethy has also had a great
impact on the Stuart's perspective,
demonstrating an up to date and
extremely effective approach to Kata "bunkai"
(application). These teachings are
introduced to the club on a regular
basis and it is hoped
will provide the students with a better
insight to what karate is really all
about.
Stuart has studied a variety of styles
during his 27+yrs of training. Starting
with Wing-Chun (Kung fu), Wado-Ryu,
Higashi, Ju-jitsu, eventually finding
the Shotokan style to be most suitable.
Chris Martin and Jim Dundon gave him a
sound grounding with which to build his
budo experience, he then went on to
receive tuition at various levels.
Stuart has had the privilege of having
had instruction by such luminaries as:
Paul Martin (3 times English
Champion)
Yoshinobu Ohta (6th DAN JKA)
Geoff Thompson OBE
"Ticky" Donovan OBE
Professor Wally Jay
Dominic Valera
George Dillman
Joe Anderson
Dave Hazard
Terry O'Neil
